In recent years Belgrade returned to the important place of cultural events in this region. Belgrade today has several museums, many galleries and theatres, and numerous weekly cultural events. Belgrade is the host of many famous festivals, some of which are among the oldest in Europe– Bitef, Bemus, Fest, October Salon.

Belgrade also preserves one of the most comprehensive international film collections in the world- Yugoslav Film Archive.
Enjoy the inventive and creative city, as there is not a day in Belgrade without something  happening!

Museums

Belgrade keeps its rich history and proudly tells a story about it through the settings in its museums. Find out more about its origin and survival through the centuries and different epochs. The National Museum is the oldest museum institution in Belgrade. It was built in 1844. under the name Museum serbski.
Today the National Museum has in its holdings of more than 400,000 cases in Serbia and neighboring countries in its archeological and historical art collections. National Museum collection are organized into four sections:

-Middle Ages
-Recent art
-Numismatics

Theatre

Art speaks the universal language, so you might not mind if you do not know every word and still you are passionate fan of theater. Opera or ballet fans can enjoy some of the plays from the rich repertoire of the National Theatre. In Belgrade there are two dozen theaters offering every night a different show. Theatrical season lasts from October to June, and if you are in Belgrade in September, do not miss BITEF, Belgrade Theatre Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious in Europe.

The National Theatre in Belgrade, was established in 1868. It is located in the heart of the City, on the Republic Square. Opera, Ballet and Drama are separate units operating within it. Performances take place at the Grand Scene ”Rasa Plaovic”. On 22nd November 1868. at the Theatre was held  the first play-”Djuradj Brankovic” and that date is celebrated as the ”Day of Theatre”.

The building has undergone several restorations and the last major renovation was in the period 1986-1989.

Cinemas

Did you know that Belgrade has one of the richest film collections in the world? Some of the film classics you can watch at the Yugoslav Film Archive, and new world blockbusters at the other Belgrade cinemas:

Established in 1949. and throughout history has repeatedly changed its status.Today ”Kinoteka” is among the institutions of special importance for Serbia. It consists of four organizational units: the Yugoslav Film Archive, the Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive – cinema, library and common services.

Venues

If you like classical music do not miss to know about the program of  the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra has recently begun implementation of a regional project ”Pika-point-point” in cooperation with the Slovenian and Croatian Philharmonic. In addition to this, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra also performs several different programs, such as Popular, Classical, New Year’s, ”Walk on the wire” cycle and so on.

Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra is the leading national orchestra and has 98 musicians.
It has succeeded in a relatively short time to acquire a good reputation thanks to which many of the media recognized it as ”one of the leading European orchestra” (Independent), ”a cult Serbian Orchestra” (Financial Times), ”the most successful cultural institution in Serbia” (Jutarnji List Zagreb), the most powerful PR weapon of Serbia” (Kvällsposten, Malmo)
That is why it is not surprising that with the Belgrade Philharmonic performed well-known names as Zubin Mehta, Sarah Chang, Krzysztof Penderecki, etc. Barry Douglas etc.
Since 2010 the Philharmonic chief conductor is the famous Chinese conductor Muhai Tang.
Often, the public identifies the Philharmonic as a carrier of social changes,
for its provocative and creative marketing, with which is always trying to awaken cultural awareness among people. Starting from December 9, Belgrade Philharmonic  is on tour in Italy.

For those who love modern music, there are popular venues such as Belgrade Arena and the Sava Center, each year hosting some of the big names of world music.
